Did you know that forests eventually reach a point of over-maturity? At the point of over-maturity, species diversity and overall tree health reaches a low. Performing a harvest on forests like these stimulates much needed growth of younger trees, and can even increase long term timber values.
Oak regeneration is dependent on disturbances in a forest. In the past, Ohio had periodic wildfires that gave oak a chance to flourish in our woods. Due to things like the Smokey Bear campaign and urban sprawl, we do not have these fires anymore. This in turn leaves the job of mother nature up to us! By opening up a canopy and reducing competition we can greatly improve the odds of oak regenerating in a managed stand of timber.
